Furniture Design

I develop thoughtful furniture around use, proportion and material—combining creative direction with a practical understanding of construction and making.

FROM IDEA TO MAKING

How a furniture project takes shape.

A good result depends less on adding detail than on resolving the right questions in the right order. The exact route changes with each project, but these are the decisions I normally work through.

01

Understand the brief.

Who will use the piece, where will it stand and what must it do? I establish the relevant dimensions, practical requirements, visual direction, budget, materials and production constraints before developing the form.

Typical output: Defined requirements · priorities · design direction.

02

Develop form and function.

Proportion, ergonomics, visual character, material and construction are developed together. 3D models and visualisations make the design understandable and allow alternatives to be compared before the details are fixed.

Typical output: Concept options · 3D model · review images.

03

Resolve the construction.

Once the direction is agreed, I work out components, joints, material thicknesses, hardware, clearances and assembly logic. When a maker or interior builder is involved, relevant production knowledge is incorporated before the design is released.

Typical output: Resolved model · key details · technical drawings.

04

Review and refine.

A first version is not automatically a final version. Client feedback, prototypes, test fits or questions from production are used to identify and correct issues before the agreed release point. The level of testing depends on the object and how it will be made.

Typical output: Revisions · agreed documentation · support where required.

EXPERIENCE IN PRACTICE

Design decisions informed by what happens next.

Across more than a hundred custom furniture and interior projects, I have worked from client conversations and visualisation through technical development, questions from production and final corrections. That experience has made me attentive to the details that often cause problems later: incomplete measurements, material behaviour, hardware conflicts, clearances, assembly order and information lost between design and making.

Experience also means knowing where my role ends. I bring the design and technical information together and involve the relevant maker, interior builder or specialist when their input is needed. This keeps responsibilities clear and allows decisions to be checked before they become expensive to correct.

WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER

One piece, a product, or part of an interior

I can lead the design development or join at a specific stage. The scope is agreed around what the project needs and who is responsible for production, site measurement and installation.

A bespoke piece

Furniture product development

Interior collaboration

A piece can begin with a practical need, reference images, a sketch or an already developed idea. I help define what matters, develop the design and prepare the agreed information for making. Where production forms part of the project, I coordinate with a suitable specialist.

For brands and manufacturers, I can develop a new furniture product or refine an existing concept. Depending on the brief, this can include form, construction, materials, 3D development, prototype feedback and technical documentation. When repeat production is intended, testing and refinement are planned into the project rather than treating the first design as final.

For interior builders and design studios, I develop individual elements or coordinated furniture packages from the supplied design intent. My role can cover 3D development, visualisation and technical drawings, while site measurement, manufacture and installation remain with the relevant project partner unless agreed otherwise.
